Write Product Copy That Sells - Tutorial

High Quality Product Descriptions

When selling digital products, your description can make a huge difference as to whether a customer will buy or not. NotionUtopia product pages provide a range of features to help you give shoppers all the information they need without overloading them.

A well curated description also provides search engines with all the information needed to recommend your products in the search tab.

Let’s take a look at some ways you can create high quality product descriptions for your Notion templates.

What is your product?

When your customer first comes across your product, they should be able to identify what it is and what purpose it serves. Keep this copy very brief, clear and to the point to avoid confusing customers.

Here’s an example by Alejandra Cienfuegos:

A Notion Tool to manage your Airbnb like a pro

Get rid of expensive software, Airbnb Super Pack is a Notion template built for Airbnb hosts. You will have everything in a very effective management space: bookings, calendar events, supplies checklists, and many more. All in one place.

Alejandra explains that this is a tool she’s built using to help Airbnb hosts manage their establishments all using a single software. She goes on to list some of the common requirements most hosts have that she’s addressed in this tool.

Without reading any more of the description, shoppers know what this product is and can decide if it is something they need. Some shoppers may already buy after reading just those few sentences, or they’ll continue reading to get even more detail on what they are purchasing.

How does the product work?

Once shoppers know what you’re selling, you need to explain how your product solves their problems. In the case of our example, Airbnb hosts have multiple areas of responsibility that they need to manage to run their establishments. The problems they are facing are that they currently need to use multiple software to manage everything and they can be very costly.

Why this template?

There are amazing tools to manage your rentals in the market, however, these options have three problems: they are usually expensive, you have to pay monthly, and sometimes they limit the rentals you can manage. With this Notion Template you'll only have to pay once, you can manage unlimited rentals and you'll obtain an all-in-one management space. Save time, save money and guarantee your guests the best Airbnb experience.

Here Alejandra highlights the pain points this product aims to solve - software tools can be expensive, be a monthly expense, and have limitations on the number of rentals you can manage. Then immediately she explains how this product aims to solve them. Shoppers would only need to do a once-off payment, they can manage an unlimited number of rentals, and they can save time.

Next, she gives a breakdown of what Notion templates are included in this tool and what purpose they serve.

Guest Management: a space for information related to your guests in each of their Customer Journey stages: prior to bookings, instructions during their stay, and information after departures (include template for surveys and reviews).

Now shoppers have a complete picture of what this product is, what’s included and how it works. Only one more component to address.

Why should they buy your product?

There is some competition when it comes to selling Notion templates. Many creators make the same product, such as habit trackers, book trackers, and meal planners, but with their own unique approach. In your “why” copy you need to emphasize your product’s USP (Unique selling proposition).

If you’ve created a more common Notion template your “why” is extremely important to help set you apart. You need to convince shoppers why they should buy your product. Outline unique features or benefits that make your template stand out above the rest.

Alejandra’s Airbnb Super pack is a more unique product. Firstly, she describes why she created the product and highlights her expertise and approach to creating this Notion template pack. This helps shoppers feel more confident when buying your products.

We are a team of two professionals in Notionología and one of our mid-term goals is to blend Notion with our hard skills. This template was made thinking on how Notion can be an excellent tool for small entrepreneurs, in this case, specifically for the Airbnb Hosts.

Shoppers know they’re buying a Notion template created by someone who has the experience to solve their problems. However, not every creator designing a calorie tracker has a nutrition background. In this case, it is helpful to explain why you created the template. You could mention what problem you were trying to solve or resources you used to help guide you through the creation process.

Alejandra’s product also contains additional documentation and resources which she lists in her description. Highlighting these additional features or bonuses that shoppers get when they buy your product is an indirect way to convince them why your product is better than the rest.

Optimizing your copy for Search Engines

Prepping your copy for search engines presents a lot of benefits like helping you rank in search and ultimately getting more sales. We are not going to get into too much detail about all the factors that go into optimizing for search engines.

Here are a few basic guidelines and tips to follow that can help improve your notion templates’ ranking.

Keywords help search engines identify what your product is about and use them to recommend your products when people search for those specific terms.

Use your main keyword in every aspect of your product’s copy - title, summary, description, url, meta title and meta description.

Using Alejandra’s Airbnb product as an example, you can see she’s used the keywords “Notion tool”, “notion template”, and “airbnb” is her main keyword. Airbnb is the ideal keyword as her target clients are Airbnb host business owners.

Descriptive Meta Title and Description

If you are unfamiliar with the terms meta title and description, these make up the preview of your notion template products in search results.

  • Be clear and descriptive - Character count is very limited, so emphasize the most relevant details about your product.
  • Use your main keyword in the title and description.
  • Customize your URL to include the same keyword as your title and description.

There’s one last part when creating your product copy that we sometimes neglect, but it can make a big difference. No product copy is complete without formatting and grammar checks.

Formatting & Grammar

It should go without saying that formatting, grammar, and spelling checks are a must, but you’d be surprised how often we don’t see it. Without these steps your amazing product copy can look sloppy, unclear, and overwhelming to shoppers.

Grammar, tone, and spelling

  • Speak to your audience - Your product copy should address the shopper as if you’re speaking to them in person. Use first and second person to engage directly with your customers and help them relate to your product and how it can help them.
  • Grammar and spell check - Always have someone look over your copy or use a grammar and spell checking app like Grammarly to ensure it is correct. Small mistakes can come across as unprofessional or worse cause confusion. A simple mistake can turn “assesses'' into “assess”.
  • Convincing tone - The main goal of a product description is to convince shoppers to buy your product. Use a confident and convincing tone without speaking down to the reader.

HTML Formatting

If you have ever looked at a lot of copy that wasn’t broken into paragraphs or used headers, then you know how difficult it can be to read and comprehend all the information. Shoppers looking at long product descriptions that are not formatted feel the same sense of overwhelm.

Use headers to break your copy into different sections. If a shopper is looking for specific information, like what is included in your Notion product, they can quickly go through the headers to find it.

NotionUtopia has the ability to do HTML formatting in product descriptions. HTML is a markup language used to structure a web page and its content. Search engines use it to help identify different pieces of your content, such as headings, paragraphs, links, and more.

Here are a few formatting options you can use:

  • Headers - Use headers to break up your product description into different sections. A page can only have one H1, which is your product title. This is why it’s important to write a title that explains exactly what the product is. You can use H2 and H3 in your product description to show main and sub headers.
  • Bolding text - It can be helpful to bold important parts of your copy. Bold words that give the most important information to help readers easily scan your descriptions.
  • Bullet lists or Numbered lists - You can list your notion template features, benefits, or contents using bullet or numbered lists. This also helps to save on character count.
  • Links - Add links to relevant resources that can benefit the shopper. You can link to walkthrough Youtube videos or blog posts, other related products that compliment this one, or add your email link.

To that end

Your product copy should not be an afterthought once you’ve created your notion templates. Done correctly, your product copy can improve your sales, whether you are selling a Notion habit tracker for $5.00 or a huge template pack for $200.00.

You can use all the unique features and resources NotionUtopia offers to make your products all they can be.
